{"id":45,"date":"2012-07-07T19:10:50","date_gmt":"2012-07-07T19:10:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/philanthropy.ruralresilience.ca\/?page_id=45"},"modified":"2013-08-09T02:08:58","modified_gmt":"2013-08-09T02:08:58","slug":"what-is-a-community-foundation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/philanthropy.ruralresilience.ca\/?page_id=45","title":{"rendered":"What is a Community Foundation?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cra-arc.gc.ca\/chrts-gvng\/chrts\/glssry-eng.html\" target=\"_blank\">Canada Revenue Agency<\/a> defines a community foundation as &#8220;an organization established to manage a community endowment fund, the income from which is distributed to registered charities within a community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s Community Foundations do three key things to build community vitality:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vitality depends on long-term resources for long-term solutions\u2014so we work with donors to build endowment funds that ensure vital futures for communities.<\/li>\n<li>Vitality comes from all corners of a community, so we grant funds to the widest possible range of organizations and initiatives.<\/li>\n<li>Vitality needs leadership, so we bring people together from all parts of our communities to stimulate new ideas, build participation and strengthen community philanthropy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And while there are many organizations working for better communities, a few important factors make our approach special:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Community foundations bring donors to the table as community builders, and help them formulate and realize their philanthropic goals, matching their interests and concerns with community needs and organizations, and finding innovative and responsible ways to give their investments lasting impact.<\/li>\n<li>Community foundations\u00a0take the broadest view of what a community is and what it needs to succeed.
